DIDO

& AENEAS

+TIMON OF ATHENS

May - June 2019 • Glasgow University Opera Society

Power, authority and responsibility have completely taken over Dido, the widowed queen who breaks her vow of eternal fidelity to her husband Sychaeus by reluctantly falling for Aeneas under the disguised pressure from her confidante Belinda and the court.

Dido’s demise is not merely a consequence of Aeneas’s divinely ordained departure for Rome; there are destructive forces at work here in the guise of a Sorceress, a kind of alter ego to Dido herself, and her accomplices. They are all at once her loyal courtiers and a product of her nightmares. The light-hearted masque Timon of Athens became more somber in this semi-staged production as it set the tone for Dido’s desolation.

Musical Director: Tiffany Vong.

Accompanied by Musick for the Mirth of Kings.

VENUS

& ADONIS

May - June 2018 • Glasgow University Opera Society

An evening diversion which engaged both the audience and the performers. Rather than treating Venus & Adonis as a museum piece, we wanted to invigorate what was exciting and important about it to its original authors and audience, in a way that spoke to our times.

The spirit of the masque was preserved by opting for a speakeasy environment and its atmosphere of opulence and mystery.

Musical Director: Harold Thalange.

Accompanied by Musick for the Mirth of Kings.
